(FOX 47) –  A church in downtown Rochester is hoping to inspire members and visitors from around the world with two new pieces of art.The Co-Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Rochester commissioned sculptor Simon Toparovsky from Los Angeles to create two bronze busts of John and Mary. They were delivered just a couple weeks ago, and are now on display in a new devotional space in the church. The sculptures depict John and Mary after the resurrection of Jesus Christ. There’s a lot of symbolism behind the sculptures as well as the surrounding space, which includes a bench for people to stop and reflect.“If they’re willing to take a little time and really ponder and reflect and look at the beauty and the wonder and then ask themselves about this relationship, of John the beloved and the mother of Jesus, we all have the same longing, we all have the same desire to discover our humanity and to discover the beauty and wonder of a new life,” said Father Gerald Mahon. The sculptor is planning to visit Rochester Friday to see the final product. The church will host a private reception for him.
