Real Madrid drop their first points in San Mames

first_imgFirst points dropped by Real Madrid without Ronaldo, they were close to losing at San Mames against Athletic but Isco scored the equalizer for a point. This Saturday was the first day in which Real Madrid suffered the first moment in which they know they are less better without Cristiano Ronaldo, who would’ve scored in San Mames against Athletic without question today. After so much hype directed at the key players like Gareth Bale or Karim Benzema, they weren’t able to deliver a good performance in a very complicated stadium where they almost lost the match if it wasn’t for Isco’s equalizer during the second half. Although the Welsh winger did provide the assist for the Spaniard during the second half, he wasn’t able to produce more moments of brilliance as he was doing at the start of the season and he crashed hard against a very compact Athletic defense. But the biggest player of this match as it usually is in these types of scenarios was the crowd in San Mames, they proved that they are amongst the toughest in all of European football and they became a real problem for the Real Madrid players in every single ball they touched. There is no doubt that the spirit of the old Cathedral lives on in the new one, they are the ones who made the biggest difference against Real Madrid.Unai Simón, un futuro muy presente. #MovistarPartidazo pic.twitter.com/kxHqiiVlJk— La Casa del Fútbol en Movistar+ (@casadelfutbol) September 15, 2018But on the local side, the Basque team had an ace under their sleeve and we finally realized why they let Kepa go that easily. Young goalkeeper Unai Simon was Athletic’s unsung hero during the match by piling up the saves against all of Real Madrid’s forwards who got frustrated against this kid’s brilliant interventions, the match could’ve easily ended with Los Blancos’ victory by more than four goals if it hadn’t been for Unai. Past the half hour of the game, Susaeta combined with De Marcos and he sent a pass to the heart of the box where both Muniain and Williams were waiting to bury the ball in. Iñaki failed his strike at first but Iker was able to score the goal and make San Mames explode with cheers because they were already ahead in the scoreline. Real Madrid kept trying to penetrate Athletic’s defense during the rest of the match but they had a really hard time getting past Unai Simon, they were finally able to get an equalizer during the second half after Gareth Bale found Isco’s header that the young Athletic Club goalkeeper wasn’t able to reach in time. But Simon’s performance wasn’t stained by this goal, he was truly the man of the match against Real Madrid.James Rodriguez, Real MadridZidane hails ‘quality’ James Rodriguez after Real Madrid’s win Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Zinedine Zidane reserved special praise for James Rodriguez after his starring role in Real Madrid’s 3-2 win over Levante.⚖ Points shared at San Mamés. #RMLiga pic.twitter.com/lraMI4aSaQ— Real Madrid C.F. ???? (@realmadriden) September 15, 2018It’s hard to understand why Julen Lopetegui still hasn’t put his trust on some of the new arrivals like Mariano, the new Real Madrid number ‘7’ is the type of player who can solve complicated situations like the one they had today at San Mames. This draw marks the first points that Los Blancos drop during the season and watching the development of the full match, it’s clear by now that the squad will struggle without a player like Cristiano Ronaldo who was there exactly for days like this Saturday. The next month will be really difficult for Real Madrid as they now have to start the Champions League next week against AS Roma, and then one week later they will have another dangerous trip to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium where they will face Sevilla FC in one of the most exciting fixtures of September. Julen Lopetegui needs to start trusting his new field players a little bit more, otherwise, he will keep dropping points like he did today and that can be very harmful to a club like Real Madrid this early in the season. What did you think about the match, who was your favorite player from either squad at San Mames?
